The Distance Learning project
The Distance Learning (Etäkoulu) project implemented mobile distance learning for Finnish children at the al-Hol prison camp in 2020-2021, developed a mobile distance learning operating model and prepared descriptive reports. The project was driven by the authorities’ desire to ensure that children’s fundamental and human rights are respected even in exceptional circumstances. The aim was to bring routine and stimulation into the everyday lives of children and young people, and to provide opportunities for the joy of learning and discovery. The aim has also been to support and promote the future integration into Finland of children and young people currently living in crisis area.
The 23 pupils living in Al-Hol were taught for almost a year. The distance learning was done entirely through WhatsApp messages. As there was no ready-made teaching material based on mobile e-learning, the working group of the Etäkoulu project was responsible for creating it in accordance with the Finnish curricula for early childhood education and basic education. This led to the development of a mobile distance learning model.
Target group
Children in Al-Hol prison camp and other fragile or crisis-affected areas that have no access to education.
Objectives
To enable children to learn even under extreme circumstances.
