Inclusive Media Literacy Education in Palestine (2023–2026)

Implementation time: 1.1.2023-31.12.2026

Project information

The Kvs Foundation continues its media literacy educational cooperation in Palestine. The aim of the Inclusive Media Literacy Education in Palestine project is to embed media literacy as an integral part of the curriculum of the Bethlehem University.

The project supports the building of Palestinian civil society by strengthening media literacy, and education in the field. The project is a continuation of our work in media education in Palestine that began in 2015.

The aim is to support the inclusion of media literacy as an integral part of the university curriculum at Bethlehem University, to strengthen the pedagogical skills of the university’s teachers, to support the critical media literacy of journalism students, and to strengthen community participation in the Palestinian territories. At the moment, media literacy is not included in the Palestinian national curriculum, and is barely included in university education.

The aim of the project is the following:

  • To train 28 teachers and trainers
  • To encourage 80 journalism students to participate in media literacy courses
  • To organise 30 community projects drawing on media literacy. Community projects will be carried out in rural communities around Bethlehem and Hebron, for example.

The aim is also to promote the local population’s right to information and to strengthen active citizenship and the prerequisites for democracy.

In the first year of operation of the project, 2023–2024, the aim was to arrange continuing education for teachers at Bethlehem University. An additional aim is to implement a critical media literacy course for journalism students at the university in cooperation with Finnish volunteer trainers. The volunteers are journalists.

This programme is supported by Finland’s development cooperation funds. Any views expressed on this page and in its links do not represent the view of the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
